How big a garden office needs to be
- One desk: about 3 m × 2.5 m fits a desk, a chair and a shelf.
- A desk and a meeting chair, or two desks: 3 m × 3 m to 4 m × 3 m.
- An office and a store, or an office and a gym: a two-room cabin, 5 m × 3 m and up.
Power and internet
Power, heat and broadband
- Power: an armoured cable from the house's fuse board, from €15 a metre. Electrical work must be done by a Registered Electrical Contractor, who gives you a completion certificate.
- Broadband: a data cable in the same trench as the power, or a mesh Wi-Fi point. Get the duct in while the trench is open.
- Heat: an electric panel heater is the usual, and part of most fitted specs.
- Light: put the desk side-on to the window, so the screen isn't facing the glass.
Planning
A garden office and the rules
A garden office used by the household fits Class 3 if it's within the limits: 30 m² for all garden structures together, 25 m² of garden left, 3 m high with a flat roof. Clients or staff calling is a different use; ask the council first. Planning in Cork has the detail.
